Google's Keyword Planner tool is one of the most comprehensive sources of keyword data available. While there are a few caveats, everyone involved with websites or online marketing are likely to find valuable data in Google's tool. And best of all, it's free!

1. Get a Google Account

The simplest method is to visit http://www.gmail.com/ and follow the steps provided to make an account. If you already have a Gmail address or Google Account, skip this step.

2. Sign up for Google Adwords

Visit http://www.google.com/adwords/ to begin creating an Adwords account:

Make sure you select a correct country, timezone and currency in the next step:

If you receive a prompt to "Skip guided setup", make sure you select this option (do not follow the guided setup).

At this point, you will receive an email from Google with your customer ID number.

3. Access the Keyword Planner tool

At this stage, Google will prompt you to create a new Adwords campaign. if you only want to use the keyword tool at this stage, simply click "Tools" in the top right hand corder and select 'keyword planner'. You can also visit the URL below:

Congratulations! You now have access to Google's Keyword data. If you want to create a campaign at a later date, simply choose "Campaigns" from the top menu, or visit the link below:

https://adwords.google.com/cm/CampaignMgmt

You don't need to create a campaign to access Google's data.
